• fVDI and GEM Demo works (still)
  
  • Reading the Alive 13 I could not resist to look for what fVDI might be doing wrong for GEM Demo. I won't comment on the other attempts made during the tests as quite many of those went way out of the playground aranym is aimed to play on.

    As for the GEM Demo I believe the presenter just didn't get the fVDI configuration correctly.

  • We have fVDI with working FreeType2 engine inside (not in CVS yet). Well, only the text rendering functions and vst_point() work yet. But it is big step...

• And the user wins!!!
  
  • Unbelievable dream became true this year for me. After quite some changes in my personal life I also got all 3 operating systems working at the same time on the same hardware (all three running sshd ;)).
  • The machine is running WinXP SP2 + coLinux + ARAnyM. I can ssh (putty.exe) to all 3 ;).

• Calamus running in ARAnyM
  
  • I have made an afros like floppy image that makes the Calamus running under fVDI in ARAnyM in 32bit color depth mode. Waiting for ARAnyM 0.8.8 release features of which it depends on.
  • Unfortunately I didn't succeed running Calamus under XaAES properly. The GEM menuline is not working there properly for me.
  • There were some important bugfixes done in the host filesystem driver regarding symbolic links and also the BetaDOS's driver was synced with the uptodate FreeMiNT's implementation.

• FreeMiNT usability progress
  
  • The XaAES is recently under heavy development. It was transformed into a form of a FreeMiNT kernel module. FreeMiNT is getting the AES finaly to the shape where there are less kernel hacks (more similar architecture to MagiC).
  • I would like to send big thanks to Frank Naumann and Odd Skancke for their work on this!

  I feel the largest problem in the Atari world right now is duplicated effort. Everyone wants to do things their way, there's 50 different benchmark programs, there's 45 aes's, etc.. Why is Olivier Landemarre developing myaes? Is Xaaes not good enough to work on? Why not replace xaaes with myaes and have community work on it. I think people are too anti-social and don't want commnuity involvement. Things don't get done because lots of people don't want to do the work that needs done.

  F.e. tempus word NG and papyrus are both very good. but why do we need TWO good word processors on a system that has basic OS problems that need to be taken care of still! That stuff is crazy in my mind. That's why I decided to do stuff like a pluggable IM client and gtk2 aes/vdi port, because it's unique and useful work, just like the original X server port, just like aranym, just like your dhcpclient port, etc. You understand.

• What is TOS, MagiC and FreeMiNT judged to?
  I just read the comp.sys.atari.st long aranym thread... sad.. you Atarians... (read "you Humans" - you did see the Iain Softley's film "K-PAX", didn't you?)
  
  Do you know what is the worst?!?
  
  • What do people expect from a new OS version? New drivers? New possibilities?
  
  
  • The FreeMiNT OS is maintained by a few (up to 10 - if ever) others.
    • 1.15.12 is OK, but 1.16 is rumorously better... right? Are you sure? Why?
    • There are no such improvements just because no user wants that indeed. There are no FreeMiNT users that would debug the parts that are rumorously buggy. But these are working for those who had written them for sure... otherwise it would not be making much sense.
    • Why is the 1.16 not working properly on TTs? Simply no-one is triyng that on regular basis, because all the gurus are using different machine (Milan, Falcon, ARAnyM).
    • No-one is willing to get the virtual memory working. Why? There are 3 (at most) users that would really be using that.
    • No-one would try to get unix-like dynamic libraries working. There would be no great modern OS unless something really magic happens.
  
  
  • The MagiC OS is maintained by a single person that is about to quit sooner or later.
  • The only reason for what I left MagiC is that I can really do something for FreeMiNT as opposed to MagiC
  • It is good enough OS, fast, but closed....
  
  
  • EmuTOS would probably never get any new OS API so that all "Atarians" could profit from that.
  • This is the only royality free solution for running FreeMiNT unless you own a real old Atari machine. This is really important to me as I tend not to run stolen software on contrary of many of you who don't care at all.
  • I even decided to let EmuTOS only do what FreeMiNT needs from TOS. Nothing more nothing less.

• Jinnee works here with XaAES in up-to-date ARAnyM
  Just found a problem in our fVDI driver implementation which currently sets always a global palette. This is wrong. Palette is vdi virtual workstation local data.
  
  Anyway, Jinnee 2.01, 2.x beta and 2.5 demo works here already.
  I've also implemented the RSC palette support required by some of the Jinnee RSC files to be displayed in correct colors.

  Just ported dhcp client (Yes, I'm going to create SpareMiNT RPM soon).
  And tried the Highwire 1.5 which finaly runs without NVDI here.

• Networking tests
  I'm beginning to like it. ;) When something got stuck due to some error than I simply made a 'ssh root@aranymbox' and killed it remotely. I had never chance to run TOS machine on internet. Now I have it and I must say it is great!
• And in the background there is the ST-Guide HCP compiling... marvelous.

• ARAnyM is Ethernet ready!
  The FreeMiNTNet XIF driver (9kB gzip) to be used with the Linux's tuntap module will be released soon.
  Please, be patient, the old .xif won't work with the current CVS version so I removed it. Anyway it was an early preview.
